Bernard Terrance Zmarthie, 62, a resident of Annapolis for 40 years, died unexpectedly Aug. 8 in his home. Born Aug. 20, 1944, in Auburn, N.Y., Mr. Zmarthie served in the Navy as a radio man and cryptographer. He was an artist, specializing in oil painting, with an emphasis on scenes of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition, he was self-employed as a painting contractor. His interests included boating, connecting with friends and the philosophical inquiry into the meaning of life, his family said. He was predeceased by his brother John on May 30, 2006. Surviving are his parents, Elwood and Helen Zmarthie of Auburn; his daughter, Eleanor Burch Melograna of Annapolis; his son, Jay Adams of Annapolis; one granddaughter; and one brother, Kevin Zmarthie of San Francisco. He was the brother of John Zmarthie who died in June. A ceremony celebrating his life and art was held at the Overlook in Annapolis Roads. Burial is private. A memorial plaque will be erected in his name at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
