Rae Una (Smith) Wheelock 80, of Plant City, FL and formerly of Syracuse died Saturday. Born April 13, 1923 in Watervale, NY where she was the daughter of the late Ray St. Elmo and Alice Ella (Goodhue) Smith. Rae grew up on her parents’ farm and graduated from Pompey High School as Salutatorian of her class of 1940. She worked as a billing clerk in Syracuse before her marriage and becoming lifetime helpmate in numerous capacities for the family business of Wheelock’s Rides and Concessions. A gentle and easy-going soul, her joys in life included nature walks, swimming at the beach, caring for her plants and animals, sightseeing and dining out, reading, playing cards and scrabble and various church organizations. Rae was predeceased by husband Avery Harrison Wheelock in 1992 and her brother Vance Smith formerly of LaFayette, NY. Rae is survived by her children, two sons Avery D. Wheelock and Andrew L. Wheelock both of Syracuse; two daughters Carol A. Hall of Columbia, CT and Linda L. Wheelock of Plant City, Fl; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister Alice Capparelli of Tully, NY and 2 nieces and a nephew. Services will be 10 am Saturday at the B.L. Bush & Sons, 10 Genesee Street, Camillus. Calling hours are 6-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Belle Isle Cemetery.
