Robert G. Schmitt, 89, of Camillus passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Elderwood in Liverpool. He was born on June 17, 1927 in Boston and grew up in Braintree, MA, where he participated in track and cross country. Active in hockey most of his life, it was his first love in sports. While in high school, he played for the Weymouth Blue Birds who played throughout New England and Lake Placid. He served with the US Navy in World War II on Pelelieu in the South Pacific. He was employed by Jockey International of Kenosha, WI, makers of Jockey brand underwear. He was active in Midstate Hockey Syracuse, both coaching and officiating and was a member of N.I.H.O.A. Syracuse Chapter of ice hockey officials. He was also a member of the first committee formed to build the Shove Park Ice Arena with details available at the Camillus Historical Society. He loved his family, his home and his church; always on hand to make them all the best that they could be. Bob was a member of Fairmount Community Church UCC, having served in many capacities. He was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother. Survived by his wife 66 years, Helen; a son Robert Jr. (Ethel) of Cicero, NY; a daughter Virginia (Russell) Mc Gibbon of Venice FL; and five grandchildren Sarah Levonyak, Amanda Tortora, Stephanie Kirkby, Christopher Schmitt, Bryan Schmitt; six great grandchildren Kyle Kirkby, Sydney Kirkby, Alex Kirkby, Zachary Schmitt, Parker Tortora and Kinsley Tortora. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 8th at Fairmount Community UCC, 4801 W. Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13219. Arrangements by B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, Camillus.
