Kenneth A. Ryan

Kenneth A. Ryan, 84, a long-time resident of Camillus, died Sunday in Rochester, NY. He was a native of New Sharon, IA, where his father farmed and raised prize Percheron horses. A 1939 graduate of Lacey High School, Mr. Ryan studied business administration at the University of Iowa with his twin brother Keith from 1940 – 1943, leaving school to fight as a Marine in the Pacific Theatre. During the Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa in May 1945, he was severely wounded by a grenade; his twin brother was killed. Mr. Ryan returned to the University of Iowa to continue his studies in 1947 and 1948. He married Joy Annette Wilson of Ottumwa, IA in 1952 and moved to Springfield Gardens in Dewitt, a central location for his job as New York sales rep for Red Jacket Pumps. In 1958, the Ryans moved to Stanley Manor in Camillus with their two oldest sons. Mr. Ryan continued to work for Red Jacket for 37 years, retiring as northeast sales manager in 1987. He was a member of Fairmount Community Church for 43 years, serving as usher, deacon, and treasurer. An avid local sports fan, he was passionate about the Syracuse Orangeman and West Genesee Wildcats, particularly the Wildcat marching band. In 2004, he moved to Quail Summit in Canandaigua, to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Mr. Ryan was predeceased in 1997 by his beloved wife Joy. He is survived by his sons Keith of Long Valley, NJ, Tim of Hackettstown, NJ, Michael of Victor, NY, his older sister Mildred of Cedar Rapids, IA, his sisters-in-law Ruth Ryan and Jeanette Long, six grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. Calling hours are 4 to 7 PM Thursday at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 10 Genesee Street, Camillus. Services are 11 am Friday at Fairmount Community Church, 4801 West Genesee Street, the Reverend Gary Ferner presiding. Burial is in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Warners.
