Shirley Parry Potter

Shirley Linnea Parry Potter, 90, of Syracuse passed away peacefully Wednesday, at Loretto Nursing Home in Syracuse. She was the daughter of Harry Edward Parry and Linnea Hagglund Parry of West Bridgewater, MA. She was a graduate of Brockton High School in 1942 and Bridgewater State Teacher’s College in Bridgewater, MA in 1946. She received her Master’s degree from the State University at Oswego, NY in 1972. In college, Mrs. Potter was Vice-President of her Senior Class and a member of Kappa Delta Pi-the National Honor Society for teachers. She was an educator all her life, teaching in Brockton, MA, East Providence, RI and Barrington, RI, before moving to Syracuse, NY. She taught school in East Syracuse-Minoa for many years and was the Reading Specialist at Woodland Elementary School, in East Syracuse. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teacher’s Association, Onondaga County Retired Teacher’s Association and a member of Fairmount Community Church and the Christian Women’s club. Before retiring, she and her husband, Harold were active in C.N.Y. Cursillo Region #2 for several years. Upon retiring, she and her husband joined M.M.A.P (Mobile Missionary Assistance Program) which is an organization to help impoverished churches and church youth camps-the work is similar to that of Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers in MMAP they traveled all over the USA in their RV’s working with others to help those in need. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold in 1990, her brother, Arthur Parry, and two sisters, Dorothy (Edward) Lewis and Barbara (George) Weston. She is survived by three children; Jo-Anne (Steve) Dorsey of Onondaga Hill; Steven (Penny) Nevens of Naches, WA; and Robert Nevens of Oxnard, CA; six grandchildren, Heather Dorsey, Meghan Dorsey, Andrew (Joy) Nevens, Adam (Lauren) Nevens, Matthew (Erica) Nevens, and Amy Nevens; ten great grandchildren; Morgan and Brady Richardson; Rosemary, Neela, Cade, Keely and Levi Nevens; Jack and Ryan Nevens and Porter Nevens; a sister-in -law, Patricia Parry; many loving nieces and nephews. Calling Hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 10 Genesee (Main) St., in village of Camillus. Services are Monday 10 am at Fairmount Community Church, United Church of Christ, 4801 W. Genesee St., Syracuse. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Onondaga Hill.
